ABOUT THE ARTIST
Tom Philabaum (American, b. 1947) is a pioneering figure in the American Studio Glass movement. After studying glass at the University of Wisconsin under renowned glass artist Harvey Littleton, Philabaum established his studio in Tucson, Arizona, in the 1970s.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Philabaum became known for his innovative approach to blown, fused, cast, and painted glass. He founded the influential Philabaum Glass Gallery in Tucson and later co-founded the Sonoran Glass School, helping establish Arizona as an important center for contemporary studio glass.

Philabaum's work has been exhibited nationally and is represented in numerous museum, corporate, and private collections.

ABOUT THIS PIECE
This impressive Reptilian Bag Vase showcases one of Tom Philabaum's most distinctive and recognizable glass patterns. The tall, sculptural vessel features a repeating cellular design in rich shades of cobalt blue, violet, magenta, and lavender, created through sophisticated cane work and carefully controlled hot-glass techniques.

The softly squared "bag" form and dramatically undulating rim give the vase an organic quality, while the layered Reptilian pattern creates remarkable depth and movement throughout the glass. At more than 14 inches tall, this is a particularly substantial and visually commanding example of Philabaum's work.

The vase is engraved with Tom Philabaum's script signature on the underside. See less
