This antique Minton trivet or tile is quite rare. One occasionally sees one with the very large profile of the Queen, but not with the elephant and ship and wreath around the portrait. I have seen another in Blue in a private collection, but have not seen any other in this lovely gold color. A lovely vestige of times gone by; a wonderful part of British Royalty.
Country of Origin: United Kingdom.
Maker: Minton, Hollis & Co.
Medium: Glazed ceramic.
Size: 7 1/8 inches diameter.
Description: Obverse depicts Queen Victoria within a wreath with “VR” cypher, against a
backdrop of Windsor Castle. Queen Victoria is wearing the diamond necklace, earrings and tiny crown.
A ship on the lower right; an elephant on the lower left.
Inscription around border “Commemorative of Record Reign 1837 to 1897”.
Reverse/base has three raised rounded feet, with inscription “Minton, Hollis & Co., Patent
Tile Works, Stoke on Trent”.
