Substantial first-edition study of the American Art Nouveau movement, American Art Nouveau by Diane Chalmers Johnson, published by Harry N. Abrams in New York in 1979.
This oversized volume examines the development of Art Nouveau in the United States from approximately 1880 to 1910, exploring its expression across decorative arts, architecture, glass, ceramics, metalwork, graphic design, posters, painting and sculpture.
Major sections examine Louis Comfort Tiffany and the American applied arts, Louis H. Sullivan and Art Nouveau architecture, and Will H. Bradley and American graphic design, placing their work within the broader cultural and artistic development of American Art Nouveau.
Of particular interest to decorative-arts collectors are the extensive sections devoted to American art glass and pottery, with examples by Tiffany, Steuben, Quezal, Frederick Carder and other important American makers.
Lavishly illustrated with 394 illustrations, including 41 tipped-in color plates. The color plates were separately printed and individually mounted into the volume as part of the original production, giving the book an especially rich visual presentation. Contemporary bibliographic sources confirm the 1979 Abrams edition and approximately 311–312 pages.
An excellent reference for collectors of Tiffany glass, American Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts design, architectural ornament, graphic design and late-19th-century American decorative arts—and a particularly handsome oversized volume for a design library or coffee table.
