Based on the distinctive iconography of the monastic habit, this sculpture depicts Saint Francis of Assisi as evidenced by the traditional Franciscan habit characterized by the large, heavily layered cowl collar and wide sleeves.
The Knotted Cincture: At the waist, you can see remnants of the knotted rope cord (cincture). Franciscan friars traditionally wear a cord with three specific knots representing their holy vows: poverty, chastity, and obedience.
The Tonsured Haircut: The hairstyle—shaved at the crown with a ring of hair left around the sides—is a traditional monastic tonsure, standard for early representations of Franciscan friars to show their humility.
Historically, Spanish Colonial depictions of St. Francis often showed him holding a small crucifix, an open book, or a human skull as a memento mori (meditation on mortality). Because the hands are completely weathered away on this piece, those specific symbolic items are missing, but the core features strongly confirm his identity as St. Francis.
