19th C. English Mahogany Bar Cabinet Sideboard by James Winter & Sons London
Item Description:
An exceptional Victorian inverted-breakfront pedestal mirror-back sideboard, expertly crafted from highly figured flame mahogany veneers circa 1850–1870. This stately piece bears the clear historical stamp of renowned makers and brokers James Winter & Sons, 101 Wardour Street, Soho, London on the drawer edge, anchoring its premium British provenance.
A standout, historically significant feature of this sideboard is its intact, original lead-lined cellarette drawer housed inside the right pedestal cabinet. Built to chill and hold bottles of wine, sherry, or spirits using ice, this rare surviving metal lining makes the piece perfectly suited to function as a luxury historic home bar or statement dining room server.
The cabinet fronts showcase spectacular matched flame mahogany grain with rich, deep original coloring and a beautiful natural patina. The columns are flanked by handsome carved corbel brackets, adding architectural depth without overpowering the clean, classic lines of the case.
Condition Report:
Structurally excellent, solid, and sturdy. The mahogany finish displays minor superficial surface scratches, light nicks, and wear entirely consistent with an authentic 19th-century antique. The original mirrored backboard remains intact; the glass is remarkably clear with minimal foxing or clouding, keeping the reflection bright and functional.
