A distinctive pair of vintage collegiate Windsor chairs by Nichols & Stone, made for Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Each chair is finished in black with restrained gold-painted ring accents along the turned legs, stretchers, back posts, and spindles. The broad curved crest rail displays the historic Cedar Crest College seal in gold, including the college’s 1867 founding date.
The chairs follow Nichols & Stone’s traditional American Windsor vocabulary, with shaped plank seats, spindle backs, turned and tapered legs, and box stretchers. Their combination of black finish, fine gold detailing, and institutional insignia gives the pair the recognizable character of vintage American collegiate furniture.
The underside retains Nichols & Stone identification, including an impressed manufacturer’s mark and original yellow factory label. A handwritten notation on the label appears to include a 1962 date, supporting a circa-1960s attribution.
An appealing pair for a library, study, office, dining area, or Cedar Crest College alum, combining classic American furniture design with a specific piece of collegiate history.
