On offer is an authentic vintage personalized autographed photograph of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, one of the most legendary naval commanders in American history.
SUBJECT: Chester W. Nimitz (1885–1966) was the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet (CINCPAC) during World War II. He commanded all Allied air, land, and sea forces in the Pacific Ocean Areas and signed the peace treaty with Japan aboard the USS Missouri in 1945.
Nimitz’s signature includes his five-star rank, Fleet Admiral, which he was promoted to in December 1944 alongside William Leahy and Ernest King. Because he signed with this specific title, the inscription was made either during late WWII or during his post-war life.
RECIPIENT: The photograph is dedicated to Charles Clemens. Following World War II and during his post-war years as Chief of Naval Operations and a goodwill ambassador for the military, Admiral Nimitz was famously gracious and prolific in answering fan mail and requests from World War II veterans, servicemen, and civilian admirers by sending personalized autographed portraits like this one.
FRAME: The picture is housed in a mid-20th-century bamboo-style frame. This framing style was incredibly popular in the late 1940s and 1950s, highly reflective of the "Tiki" and Pacific-themed design trends brought home by servicemen returning from the Pacific Theater. The stamp on the back read "B-4721 / 4 x 5", which corresponds to a standard commercial photo size and framing production code from that era.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Upper right quarter. Unframed dimensions: 4.75 inches high x 3.75 inches wide.
