An atmospheric framed impression of Paul Sandby’s The Sepulchre of King Theodorick near Ravenna, made after a composition by the celebrated French architectural artist Charles-Louis Clérisseau.
Executed in etching and aquatint and printed in warm sepia tones, the composition depicts the remarkable Mausoleum of Theodoric at Ravenna, Italy. The monumental ancient structure dominates the landscape while small figures, riders, vegetation and architectural fragments animate the foreground.
The print carries the original attributions “Clérisseau Pinxt” at lower left and “P. Sandby Fecit” at lower right. Beneath the image is Sandby’s publication line dated March 1778.
Sandby’s aquatint technique gives the image broad tonal passages and a wash-like atmosphere particularly well suited to Clérisseau’s architectural composition. An example of this composition is held by the British Museum.
The 1778 inscription records the original publication date of Sandby’s plate. The printing date of this individual impression has not been established. The work remains in its existing framing, and the concealed sheet margins, complete plate mark, watermark and reverse have therefore not been examined.
Presented under glazing with layered matting in an ornate gilt and bronze-toned frame with classical foliate, fluted and beaded decoration. The warm frame beautifully complements the sepia printing and gives the piece substantial decorative presence.
Visible artwork/sheet area approximately 19 × 13 inches. Overall framed size approximately 27 × 21 inches.
