This distinctive pillow is made from an antique 17th-century Italian Florentine wool textile, preserving a fragment of the decorative textile tradition associated with Florence and the broader Italian Baroque period. Textiles of this type were originally created as furnishing fabrics and decorative woven elements for sophisticated interiors, where richly patterned surfaces formed an important part of the overall architectural decoration. The surviving antique textile has now been thoughtfully adapted into a long rectangular pillow, allowing the historic material to remain both visible and usable in a contemporary interior.
The front is constructed from the original woven wool textile, while the pillow is finished with a cotton backing and feather filling. The close photographs reveal the substantial woven structure of the old wool, including areas where centuries of wear have exposed the underlying foundation. This visible construction gives a buyer a clear sense of the textile's genuine age and hand-worked character rather than the uniform surface of a modern reproduction.
The composition is particularly striking. Broad curving and pointed geometric sections divide the surface into alternating fields of deep indigo blue, warm beige, tan, and muted sage green, outlined by narrow rust-brown contours. Stylized flowers are scattered independently across these compartments, including large carnation-like blossoms with serrated petals and smaller floral forms near the lower edge. Their tones of antique gold, mustard yellow, faded rose, raspberry, cream, sage, and muted green provide lively accents against the stronger architectural framework.
What makes this piece especially appealing is the contrast between the disciplined geometric structure and the delicate botanical imagery. The elongated proportions preserve a broad section of the original design, making the pillow decorative from a distance while revealing the craftsmanship and age of the textile at close range. It works particularly well as an individual statement pillow on a sofa, bench, daybed, or layered with other antique textiles.
