Dating to … Read more An exceptionally rare surviving Lugano Hög high-back lounge chair by IKEA, documented in the company’s 1958 Swedish catalog. Dating to IKEA’s formative years in Sweden, the Lugano predates the company’s later association with flat-pack furnishings and reflects the distinctly Scandinavian modern character of its earliest collections.

The chair features a dramatically raked high back, separate headrest and seat cushion, sculpted wooden armrests, and a light beech frame. Its proportions and construction give it a striking architectural presence characteristic of late-1950s Swedish modern design.

This example has been professionally restored and fully reupholstered in Camira Main Line Flax, a wool-rich textile chosen for its period-appropriate texture and understated appearance. The deep olive upholstery complements the warm tone of the original beech frame while allowing the chair’s unusual silhouette to remain the focus.

The Lugano Hog appears by name in IKEA’s 1958 catalog—the same year IKEA opened its first permanent furniture showroom in Älmhult, Sweden.
