On offer is an exquisite pair of Jacobean Revival console tables, meticulously crafted by a legendary American furniture maker. These tables are a high-quality, early 20th-century revival of Late 17th-century English furniture design. The shape is demilune—half-moon / semi-octagonal—engineered to sit perfectly flush against an entryway or hallway wall.
STYLE: The tables feature prominently carved spiral or "barley-sugar" twist legs. This technique was popularized in England during the reign of King Charles II and the William & Mary period. The front apron showcases deep, hand-detailed lunette and acanthus leaf relief carvings flanked by traditional scrollwork panels. Connecting the base is a highly decorative geometric lower stretcher featuring central, openwork carvings of royal crowns flanked by lush, stylized foliage. The structure uses classic heavy block joints connecting the stretchers to bun feet, giving it a commanding, aristocratic presence.
MATERIALS The tables are constructed from high-grade white oak with a rich, warm brown finish. The wood exhibits heavy, dense open-pored grain patterns and a deep, naturally aged patina typical of fine hardwoods curated by premium early 19th/20th-century workshops.
MAKER: The brass identification plate on the underside reads: "Irving & Casson—A. H. Davenport Co. / BOSTON (Copley Sq.) / NEW YORK (Fifth Avenue)." This label belongs to one of the most prestigious luxury furniture and interior design partnerships in American history.
A.H. Davenport Co. was famous for outfitting affluent Gilded Age mansions and even executing custom furniture commissions for The White House. Irving & Casson specialized in exquisite architectural woodwork and historic period revivals. Given the natural production alignment and adjacent factories in East Cambridge, MA, the two powerhouses officially merged in 1914. The presence of this unified label places the production of these tables precisely after that merger. As such, they are true century-old antiques that represent the pinnacle of American-made historical revivals.
