An exceptional mid-century Italian majolica ceramic garden stool, dating to the circa 1960s–1980s, masterfully sculpted in the coveted trompe-l'œil style to replicate a stacked tier of four plush, tasseled decorative cushions. Hand-crafted and hand-painted in Caltagirone, Sicily—the world-renowned capital of historic Italian tin-glazed pottery—this striking statement piece bears the authentic cursive signature "Boria Caltagirone" prominently integrated into the decorative yellow banding. The piece is attributed to the respected Boria family artisan workshops, which gained widespread acclaim during the post-WWII Hollywood Regency and mid-century design boom for their high-quality Sicilian art pottery.
The top surface features a beautifully balanced Renaissance-revival acanthus scroll (Foglia d'Acanto) pattern composed of rich emerald greens, sun-drenched yellows, and deep cobalt blues set against a creamy white ground. Every corner is intricately detailed with sculpted, hand-painted ceramic representations of braided textile cord tassels, enhancing the delightful visual illusion. This multi-functional accent is perfectly suited for use as an interior accent seat, a statement patio stool, or a unique Hollywood Regency-style side table.

The hand-painted glaze, color saturation, and decorative tassels remain vibrant and intact. The piece exhibits a dense, natural web of fine craquelure (crackle glaze) throughout, which is entirely characteristic and expected of authentic, age-matured Italian tin-glazed earthenware from the mid-to-late 20th century. It has been meticulously scoured/cleaned and is ready for display! Note: This vintage piece is structurally compromised and possesses a cosmetic defect. It features a small through-and-through vertical stress fracture that originates at the unglazed raw bottom rim and travels 2" up the exterior side of the stool, splitting the molded ceramic glaze (see photos). Due to the porous nature of low-fire terracotta earthenware, this item isn't structurally sound enough to support human weight or heavy objects, and is priced accordingly. However, the crack could be stabilized easily by applying an epoxy, to prevent it from growing any bigger. less
