Published by the British Museum Press in 1997, German Stoneware 1200–1900: Archaeology and Cultural History by David Gaimster is an important and extensively illustrated reference devoted to seven centuries of German stoneware production.
This first-edition hardcover surveys the development, manufacture, decoration, trade and cultural significance of German stoneware from the medieval period through the nineteenth century. Particular attention is given to the major production centers of the Rhineland and beyond, including Siegburg, Langerwehe, Cologne, Frechen, Raeren, Westerwald, Creussen, Saxony and Bunzlau.
The volume also explores the international stoneware trade, archaeological discoveries, Renaissance print sources, religious and political imagery, armorial decoration, historicism, Jugendstil production, reproductions and forgeries. Technical appendices address provenance analysis, German stoneware glazes and dated shipwreck finds.
The catalogue draws upon the collections of the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Museum of London and is illustrated throughout with approximately 40 color and 500 black-and-white images. Contributions are by Robin Hildyard, John A. Goodall, Judy Rudoe, Duncan R. Hook, Ian C. Freestone and Mike S. Tite.
A substantial scholarly reference that remains particularly useful to collectors, dealers, historians and researchers of German and European ceramics.
