Filmus renders the intimate ritual with remarkably fine, expressive linework, concentrating attention on the figure’s face, hands, book and wine cup. The restrained monochromatic composition gives the work a quiet, contemplative presence.

Filmus was an American figurative artist whose depictions of Jewish people, traditions and everyday life became an important part of his body of work. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Barnes Foundation and later taught at Cooper Union.
