Large early 20th-century English Royal Coat of Arms shield in painted plaster, reclaimed from a Great House pub in the British Isles. This impressive architectural piece has wonderful presence and a rich, even patina on the original gilt-gold and polychrome paint.
The shield is quartered with the historic arms of the United Kingdom:
First and fourth quarters: the three lions passant guardant of England
Second quarter: the lion rampant of Scotland
Third quarter: the harp of Ireland
(Wales does not appear separately, as it was already integral to the Kingdom of England at the time of the Acts of Union.)The shield is encircled by the Garter, inscribed Honi soit qui mal y pense (“Shame on him who thinks evil of it”), the motto of the Order of the Garter founded by Edward III. Above sits the royal crown surmounted by a crowned lion.

The supporters are the crowned lion of England (dexter) and the chained unicorn of Scotland (sinister). They stand on a compartment bearing the royal motto Dieu et mon Droit (“God and my right”). Foliage representing the rose, thistle and shamrock completes the composition.
The high-relief plaster has excellent depth and the original painted surface remains intact with attractive age-related wear. A rear fixing hole allows it to be hung without drilling into the piece.
A striking statement work of British heraldry, suitable for a traditional interior, library, or collection.
