c. 1910s; by Ithaca Sign Works for Baur-Mullarky Co. - Keokuk, IA
Early 20th-century mercantile advertising sign created for the Baur-Mullarky Co. shoe store at 414 Main Street in Keokuk, Iowa. Executed in a vernacular commercial style with early Art Deco influence, the narrow vertical composition features three illustrated women’s shoes against a mustard-yellow ground, accompanied by bold black and red typography. The metal sign has been mounted to a plywood backing for support and display.
Ithaca Sign Works produced painted, printed, and lithographed trade signs for retailers throughout North America beginning in the late 19th century, while period advertisements document Baur-Mullarky Co. operating its Keokuk shoe store at 414 Main Street by 1911.
