Exceptionally ornate antique German Hanau 800 silver tea stainer, dating back approximately to 1890-1910. Features elaborate high-relief historical decoration throughout the openwork terminal depicts a man and woman facing one another beneath a tree, surrounded by richly modeled flowers and scrolling foliage. The broad surround is decorated with additional birds, floral motifs, leaves and Rococo-style scrollwork. At the center is a deeply formed pierced tea-straining bowl with a surviving gold was/gilt interior, providing an attractive contrast with the silver surround.
The reverse is marked "800", indicating 800/1000 silver, together with worn pictorial Hanau-style pseudo-hallmarks. The individual workshop has not been conclusively identified so no specific maker attribution is being made. Piece weighs 80 grams and is 5 1/2" X 3 1/2". Bowl is approximately 1" deep.
