A bold and substantial vintage accessory, this sterling silver money clip is centered by an impressive 1971 Bahamas $5 silver coin featuring Queen Elizabeth II. With its oversized coin and substantial sterling mount, the piece has a wonderful presence, combining numismatic history with the timeless appeal of a classic gentleman’s accessory.
The large silver coin depicts a youthful crowned profile of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by the inscription “Commonwealth of the Bahama Islands.” Issued in 1971, shortly before the Bahamas achieved independence from Britain in 1973, the coin dates from an interesting transitional period in Bahamian history. These impressive $5 pieces were struck in .925 sterling silver and are notably substantial coins, originally weighing approximately 42 grams. The reverse of the 1971 issue features the national coat of arms and the denomination.
Measures approximately 2.25 inches deep, 1.75 inches wide, and 0.50 inch high. Total weight: 75 grams. The circulated surface of the coin gives this example particularly appealing character, with wear and patina emphasizing that this was a genuine piece of currency rather than simply a decorative medallion. Its large scale makes an especially striking centerpiece for the money clip. The coin is held within a handsome sterling silver mount featuring a thick ribbed design, giving the piece an architectural, almost Art Deco-inspired quality. The reverse is fitted with a broad, sturdy clip designed to securely hold folded currency. The mount is clearly stamped for sterling. Good vintage condition with signs of wear and use. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Substantial in the hand and weighing an impressive 75 grams overall, this is an unusual combination of vintage silver, British royal history, Bahamian history, and classic men’s style. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of vintage gentleman’s accessories, sterling silver, world coins, or Queen Elizabeth II memorabilia.
