Beautiful late Victorian English sterling silver dressing-table/toilet jar. Hallmarked London 1899 and retailed by the renowned Mappin & Webb of London. C.D. maker/sponsor mark is attributed to Charles Henry Dunenil. Dumenil was a London silversmith associated with finely made dressing and toilet articles. Additional hallmarks include the lion passant for sterling silver and London leopard's head and lowercase "d" date letter for 1899. The underside is also engraved "Mappin & Webb London"
The jar has a classic cylindrical body with a gently domed overhanging lid. The lid is decorated with a large, finely engraved intertwined period monogram, giving it elegant personal character. Base diameter is 2 1/2", lid diameter is 3" and it is 2 1/2" tall. It weighs 133 grams.
