The tightly woven domed skep displays a beautiful natural honey-coloured patina acquired through age and use, while the rustic timber frame is constructed with simple pegged joints and pierced ventilation holes. The underside reveals the wonderfully honest handmade construction and considerable historic wear. Originally used for housing a colony of bees before the widespread adoption of modern framed hives, surviving examples such as this are now highly decorative pieces of English rural folk art, combining agricultural history with the sculptural quality of traditional basketry. A particularly appealing and authentic country-house decorative object, with the imperfections and mellow surface expected from generations of age and use. Condition wise we have deep cleaned, hand condition waxed and hand polished the timber from top to bottom, there will be some age and use related patina marks based on normal use and transport Dimensions Height: 59cm Width: 48cm Depth: 40cm See less
