Fine Regency Mahogany Supper Table, Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1820 Executed in beautifully figured mahogany, the circular tilt-top … Read more Fine Regency Mahogany Supper Table, Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1820 Executed in beautifully figured mahogany, the circular tilt-top is arranged with a large central dished reserve surrounded by eight smaller individual dishes, each framed by finely carved mouldings and exceptionally attractive foliate and fan-carved ornament. The table is supported upon an elegant turned pedestal with a boldly spiral-reeded knop, descending to three beautifully swept sabre legs of wonderfully restrained Regency proportion. The exceptional quality of the timber, accomplished carving, elegant tripod construction and sophisticated pedestal form are all characteristic of the type of furniture associated with Gillows of Lancaster and London during the early 19th century; related pedestal tables are documented through surviving Gillows designs and attributed examples. Of particular interest, the underside of the present table bears the impressed four-digit number “6142”, providing a tantalising further connection with the numbered workshop practices associated with important cabinet furniture of the period, although the number has not presently been conclusively identified within the Gillows archive. Retaining its brass tilt-top catch and beautifully patinated surface, this is a wonderfully sculptural and highly functional example of sophisticated Regency dining-room furniture.
