A particularly handsome george iii serpentine commode, finely veneered throughout in richly figured burl yew, the veneers carefully selected and arranged to create striking symmetrical and chevron patterns across the top and four graduated drawers. The shaped façade is enriched with elegant neoclassical gilt-brass furniture incorporating classical urn, swag and foliate motifs, with further decorative mounts to the apron and feet. The beautifully figured timber, sophisticated serpentine form and quality of construction place this piece firmly within the tradition of the leading english cabinetmakers working during the third quarter of the 18th century. The sophisticated serpentine form and richly applied gilt-brass mounts are closely related to the celebrated group of george iii commodes associated with the royal cabinet-makers william vile and john cobb. The use of highly figured veneers, pronounced serpentine lines and elaborate french-inspired metalwork are characteristic of fashionable london cabinetmaking of the 1760s and particularly evocative of cobb’s work condition wise the piece has been sympathetically restored to include a light wash back and french polish, the idea being to keep all the original charm and patina whilst making it clean and presentable for the new owner dimensions height: 83.5cm width: 90cm depth: 57cm See less
