This antique 17th-century Italian Florentine tapestry pillow is fashioned from an early woven textile associated with the decorative textile tradition of Florence and Italy during the Baroque period. Originally created as a luxury furnishing textile rather than as a modern pillow fabric, the historic fragment has been preserved and adapted into a decorative pillow, allowing an early textile to continue as a functional work of art. Woven in wool and silk, the piece combines the strength and substantial texture of wool with finer silk details used to articulate portions of the ornament and introduce subtle differences in surface and sheen.
The surviving textile presents an elaborate botanical composition organized across a long rectangular format. Large stylized blossoms and leafy forms are connected by scrolling stems and curving outlines, while broad areas of pattern create a layered, almost architectural arrangement. The floral motifs are highly stylized rather than naturalistic, reflecting the decorative vocabulary of period textiles in which flowers and foliage were transformed into rhythmic ornamental forms. Shades of antique gold, mustard yellow, muted celadon and sage green, teal, dusty rose, faded raspberry, cream, beige, camel, warm brown, and burgundy remain visible throughout the textile.
What distinguishes this particular piece is the relationship between its sophisticated early floral drawing and the visibly aged woven surface. Portions of the original wool and silk decoration remain strongly defined, while other areas reveal the underlying structure of the textile, making its handwoven construction particularly apparent. The combination of early Florentine craftsmanship, wool-and-silk construction, botanical ornament, and centuries-old surface character gives the pillow both decorative and historical interest.
As a decorative object today, the elongated proportions make it especially effective on a sofa, settee, daybed, bench, or layered with other antique textiles. More than simply a floral pillow, it preserves a fragment of an early Italian furnishing textile and offers a tangible connection to the decorative textile traditions of 17th-century Florence.
