This antique 17th-century Italian Florentine tapestry pillow is made from a historic textile dating to the 1600s, preserving a fragment of the sophisticated decorative textile tradition for which Florence was celebrated. Florentine workshops had a long history of producing luxury fabrics for affluent domestic and ecclesiastical interiors, and textiles were an important component of interior decoration alongside carved furniture, paintings, and other decorative arts. Today, the surviving antique textile has been adapted into a pillow, allowing an early piece of Italian weaving to be preserved in a functional and highly decorative form.
Woven in wool and silk, the textile combines the substantial body and texture of wool with the finer qualities traditionally associated with silk. Its design is organized through broad curving compartments and sweeping lines rather than a dense allover repeat. Stylized carnation-like blossoms are positioned within these larger fields, including a raspberry-red flower and an ivory blossom edged in deep rose. Carnations and related floral forms were recurring motifs in European decorative textiles, valued for their recognizable silhouette and ability to be translated into highly stylized woven ornament.
The composition is particularly distinctive for its large central field of deep indigo blue, surrounded by camel, beige, antique gold, sage, and warm neutral sections delineated by terracotta-rust outlines. Additional colors include raspberry, crimson, dusty rose, teal, cream, ivory, ochre, and brown. This combination of restrained botanical imagery, large-scale geometry, and strong contrasting color gives the textile an unusually modern visual quality despite its considerable age.
As a surviving 17th-century Florentine textile fragment, the pillow has interest beyond its decorative function. It represents the preservation and reuse of an early woven textile whose craftsmanship, materials, coloration, and design connect it to the broader history of Italian decorative arts. Its rectangular proportions make it suitable as an individual statement pillow or as part of a collection of antique European textiles.
