This substantial figure is made from glazed Shigaraki clay and has a warm, rustic appearance. The Tanuki wears its traditional straw hat and is depicted with a staff, a sake flask and a pouch. Its rounded belly, large eyes and playful expression give it the characteristic slightly mischievous appearance for which these Japanese figures are so well known.

Dimensions: height 50 cm, width 38 cm, depth 26 cm.

The glaze varies from deep brown and black to lighter cream and earthy tones, with beautiful textural differences across the fur, belly and accessories. An impressed mark can be found on the back of the straw hat.

The Tanuki belongs to the yōkai of Japanese folklore and is described in old stories as a cheerful and cunning creature with the ability to change its shape. Over time, it became a popular symbol of good fortune.

In Japan, Tanuki figures are often placed outside homes, shops and restaurants as symbols of good luck, prosperity and protection. The different attributes add to this symbolism: the straw hat represents protection, the sake flask abundance and hospitality, and the pouch financial fortune. See less
