An exceptional and monumental french aubusson tapestry dating from the late 17th century, circa 1680–1700, depicting the celebrated historical episode “the family of darius before alexander,” also known as “the tent of darius” or “the queens of persia at the feet of alexander.” the composition is inspired by the celebrated cycle devoted to alexander the great designed by charles le brun (1619–1690), first painter to king louis xiv and one of the most influential artists of the french grand siècle. The scene represents the dramatic encounter following the battle of issus, when alexander the great defeated the persian king darius iii. After the battle, members of darius's family—including his mother, wife and daughters—were captured and brought before alexander and his companion hephaestion. According to the classical account, darius's mother initially mistook hephaestion for alexander and bowed before him. Rather than taking offense, alexander reassured her, declaring that hephaestion was “another alexander.” the episode became one of the most celebrated examples of the conqueror's magnanimity and clemency. The tapestry translates this historic episode into an extraordinarily rich decorative composition populated by elegantly dressed figures, sumptuous textiles, architectural elements and an elaborate landscape setting. Woven in wool and silk, the tapestry demonstrates the technical sophistication for which the aubusson workshops became renowned throughout europe. The subtle variations of color, elaborate costumes and carefully modeled figures create an exceptional sense of depth and theatricality. The tapestry bears the woven inscription “avbvsson,” identifying its manufacture in the historic french tapestry center of aubusson. Its monumental dimensions—approximately five meters wide—give the work an extraordinary architectural presence. Originally, tapestries of this scale were intended for the interiors of aristocratic residences, palaces and important ceremonial rooms, where they provided both magnificent decoration and insulation. Despite its considerable age, the tapestry retains a remarkable decorative presence. It displays wear, fading, historic restorations and areas of loss consistent with more than three centuries of age. A protective backing has been added to help preserve and support the textile. A rare and imposing example of 17th-century french aubusson tapestry weaving, combining monumental scale, historical subject matter and the artistic influence of charles le brun.
