Crafted … Read more Here is a fabulous 1960s Industrial Modernist adjustable task lamp, attributed to Italy based on its design and construction. Crafted in brushed steel, the lamp has a wonderfully architectural tubular form with a substantial square base, articulated arm and long cylindrical shade.

The design is beautifully minimal, with clean tubular forms, mitered corners and a series of narrow ventilation slots along the upper portion of the shade. A black circular rim provides subtle contrast at the end of the cylinder, while the shade directs a focused pool of light downward. There is an on/off switch on the cord.

The articulated construction allows the upper portion of the lamp to be repositioned, dramatically changing both its profile and the direction of the light. Folded into its compact U-shaped configuration, the lamp measures approximately 10 inches wide by 10 inches deep by 16 inches high.

The brushed steel has developed a substantial naturally aged patina, giving the lamp wonderful character and emphasizing its industrial, machine-age quality. The combination of the raw aged surface and precise geometric form gives the piece a particularly sculptural presence.

The lamp is unmarked; the Italian attribution is based on closely related documented examples from the period. A particularly unusual piece of functional lighting that reads as much as a work of Modernist sculpture as it does a task lamp. See less
