Shonk Co. for the Joseph Banigan Rubber Co. of Providence, Rhode Island.

The center features the company’s distinctive lion trademark standing proudly on a rocky landscape. Ornate lettering reads “Banigan’s Are the Best” and “Rubbers,” with additional advertising information arranged around the perimeter.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, “rubbers” commonly referred to protective rubber footwear worn over shoes or to heavy rubber boots. When paired with thick wool socks, insulated rubber boots were sometimes colloquially called “arctics.” Such footwear was essential equipment for farmers, outdoorsmen, and laborers working in wet or cold conditions.
