The figure is modeled standing in flowing robes upon an elaborate aquatic and lotus-inspired base, combining serene devotional imagery with finely rendered decorative detail.
Guanyin is depicted with a calm, meditative expression beneath an elaborate hooded headdress. Long, gracefully modeled robes fall in layered folds around the body, complemented by a beaded necklace and additional strands of beads. One crossed hand holds a string of Buddhist prayer beads, while the other appears to hold a scroll or rolled text, both reinforcing the figure's devotional character. The lower portion is particularly decorative. Guanyin stands above what appears to be a stylized lotus and wave-form base, surrounded by swirling water, beads and an expressive mythical aquatic creature. Sculpture is finished in the characteristic creamy ivory-white glaze associated with blanc-de-Chine porcelain.
This 23” tall figure would work exceptionally well in a modern or contemporary interior because its monochromatic surface gives an elaborate traditional sculpture a surprisingly clean appearance. It would complement Hollywood Regency, Chinoiserie, Asian Modern, traditional, eclectic and collected interiors. See less
