A spectacular survivor from the golden age of Egyptomania, this monumental circa 1920 Egyptian wall hanging is an extraordinary piece of decorative textile art. Measuring nearly six feet tall, the banner is remarkable not only for its scale, but for the astonishing vibrancy of its colors and the tremendous amount of hand craftsmanship involved in its creation.
The entire composition has been hand sewn, with individually shaped pieces of richly colored fabric carefully cut, positioned, and stitched onto a substantial thick linen-style backing. Deep crimson, turquoise blue, orange, green, ochre, black, and gold tones create a dramatic contrast against the warm neutral ground. The precision of the appliqué work suggests many tens of hours of painstaking labor, particularly in the figures, garments, ceremonial objects, and small decorative details.
The imagery draws heavily from the visual language of ancient Egyptian temple and tomb decoration. At the center, two elaborately dressed Egyptian figures face one another in a ceremonial scene, surrounded by stylized hieroglyphic and ritual motifs. They carry staffs, floral forms, vessels, and other objects inspired by ancient Egyptian religious imagery. Above them is a cartouche-like panel of hieroglyphic symbols, while the upper register is dominated by three large stylized lotus blossoms.
The lotus was among ancient Egypt's most enduring symbols, closely associated with the sun, rebirth, regeneration, and the cyclical renewal of life. Below the figures, the composition incorporates further Egyptian-inspired imagery, including a prominent scarab, another powerful ancient symbol connected with the rising sun, transformation, and renewal. Flanking forms, solar disks, birds, and the boat-like arrangement of the lower design further evoke the elaborate symbolic vocabulary that fascinated Western travelers and collectors during the early 20th century.
Overall measurements: approximately 71 inches high by 34.5 inches wide. Dating to around 1920, the hanging belongs to the period when European and American fascination with Egypt was reaching extraordinary heights. Tourism to Egypt had become an important part of the Grand Tour for affluent travelers, and workshops produced sophisticated decorative objects specifically for this international clientele. This exceptionally large and labor-intensive textile was likely created as a high-quality souvenir for a wealthy tourist, far removed from the small inexpensive keepsakes commonly brought home from a journey. Most impressive is the condition and visual impact. After approximately a century, the colors remain amazingly rich and vivid, allowing the craftsmanship and theatrical quality of the original design to remain immediately apparent. The broad black border gives the enormous composition a finished, almost architectural presence when displayed on a wall. Very good antique condition with some age-related spotting and staining. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
A truly statement-making piece, this would be exceptional in an eclectic interior, library, collector's study, grand entry, or room incorporating Egyptian Revival, Art Deco, Grand Tour, or maximalist décor. At nearly six feet tall, it functions as much as a piece of large-scale wall art as it does an antique textile.
