A wonderfully sculptural antique South Indian water vessel, hand-hammered in copper and distinguished by an exceptionally decorative chased copper-alloy/brass collar and substantial articulated ring handles.
Likely dating to the 19th century, the tall, slender vessel retains a beautifully aged surface with layers of warm copper, dark oxidation and naturally occurring verdigris. The broad upper collar is particularly striking, decorated by hand with repeating geometric motifs and raised bosses. Heavy ring handles and visible traditional riveted construction give the piece an almost architectural quality. The interior retains remnants of its traditional silvery tinning.
This is a fabulous decorator-scale object. Its narrow profile makes it especially versatile for a console, fireplace hearth, library, entry, open shelving or alongside a collection of antique pottery and vessels. Equally compelling in Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, English Country, Belgian, traditional or collected global interiors.
The vessel is attributed to South India based upon its form, materials and traditional construction; no maker or origin mark has been located.
Dimensions: approximately 9"H × 7"W at widest point. Mouth opening 5 1/2" diameter. Pedestal base 4 1/2" diameter.
Beautiful antique condition with significant authentic patina consistent with age and use, including oxidation, verdigris, surface wear, discoloration and losses to the original surface/tinning. It has deliberately not been polished so that its wonderfully aged character remains intact.
