c. 1920s; The William Schollhorn Co. - New Haven, CT
Painted tin lithograph countertop advertising display with attached pliers and test nails.
This interactive hardware store display promotes Bernard Pliers with bold red lettering and playful lithographed graphics of a young boy snipping nails. Customers were invited to "Test Out Bernard Pliers" by cutting one of the provided nails from the built-in tray, demonstrating the strength of the patented parallel-grip design. The display retains its original steel pliers, still mounted in the front trough, along with remnants of nails used for demonstrations. The reverse side is plain tin, while the front face features detailed illustrations of the plier types available at the time. An outstanding piece of early 20th-century American tool advertising, both interactive and visually compelling.
