Late 19th-century tin lithograph advertisement for “The Club Cocktails,” specifically the company’s pre-mixed Manhattan cocktail. Copyrighted in 1894 by G.F. Heublein & Bro. of Hartford, Connecticut, the lithograph was manufactured by the Chas. W. Shonk Co. of Chicago.
The richly detailed interior scene depicts a formally dressed gentleman relaxing in a wicker chair beside a tiled fireplace. He holds a stemmed cocktail glass while smoking a cigarette. A labeled bottle of “The Club” Manhattan Cocktails appears on an ornate side table alongside an oil lamp, matchbox, and cigarettes.
The lower margins are marked “Copyrighted 1894 by G.F. Heublein & Bro.” and “Chas. W. Shonk Co. Litho Chicago.” The advertisement is presented in a later faux-burl wood frame with backing paper and an attached wire hanger.
G.F. Heublein & Bro. introduced “The Club Cocktails” in 1892, offering pioneering pre-mixed bottled cocktails that included Manhattans and martinis. The Hartford company later became associated with A.1. Steak Sauce and acquired the American rights to Smirnoff vodka in 1939.
