Vintage mechanical point-of-sale display advertising Upson Train Board, a lightweight fiberboard marketed for use as roadbed and scenery support in mid-century model railroading.
The dimensional display is primarily constructed from Upson's own fiberboard product, which was die-cut and printed in bright orange, black, and cream. Its whimsical design depicts a freight train traveling along “The Upson Line,” complete with illustrated railcars, wheels, tracks, buildings, and curling smoke plumes.
A striped railroad-crossing gate is positioned above the train. When powered, the gate raises and lowers rhythmically through the original motor and spring mechanism mounted at the rear.
Promotional displays of this type were supplied to hobby shops and hardware stores carrying Upson board for HO- and O-scale railroad layouts. The original mechanical assembly has been tested and remains operational.
