Large and beautifully made Chinese polychrome porcelain “Laughing Buddha” statue, styled in the colorful famille rose palette. It depicts Budai (the Zen monk revered as a symbol of happiness, abundance and good fortune) seated with one knee raised, a large exposed belly and a joyful, smiling expression. This piece is expertly hand-painted – his robes feature a colorful, highly detailed pattern composed of vibrant pink, yellow, and turquoise floral motifs alongside traditional Chinese decorative bands. He is holding a string of gilded Buddhist prayer beads in his left hand while resting his right hand over his classic cloth sack of riches.
