An impressive reproduction of 19th-century hand-colored equestrian engraving titled Skirmisher, after celebrated British sporting artist and engraver Charles Hunt (1803–1877).
The large-format sporting print depicts the distinguished racehorse Skirmisher, shown with his attendant in an expansive English landscape. The inscription identifies Skirmisher as the winner of the Ascot Cup, Great Yorkshire Handicap, and the Decennial Stakes at York, and records the horse as the property of the Earl of Zetland.
Hunt was particularly known for his finely detailed equestrian and sporting subjects, and this handsome example combines the appeal of British horse racing history, Victorian sporting art, and traditional country-house décor.
