Antique hand-crank mechanical carousel toy featuring an early 20th-century carousel structure mounted on a large painted wooden base. The carousel incorporates a Masonite canopy, striped central column, painted support poles, metal operating mechanism, and exterior crank.
Mid-century molded plastic animals were glued onto the carousel at a later date as replacements for the missing original figures. The assortment includes zebras, big cats, a gorilla, and other zoo animals arranged around the rotating platform.
Turning the hand crank operates the carousel mechanism. The combination of early mechanical construction, later replacement animals, and naturally aged painted surfaces gives the piece distinctive folk art character.
