This vintage abstract sculpture presents a compelling study in industrial minimalism, its square metal form punctuated by a grid of nine (visible) evenly spaced hemispherical domes rising from an otherwise flat, planar surface. Each rounded protrusion is smoothly and precisely formed, their uniform scale and rhythmic spacing creating a strong sense of geometric order, while the play of light across their curved surfaces produces shifting highlights and shadows that animate the piece from every viewing angle. The metal — likely a lead or lead-alloy casting given its density and surface character — carries a deep, dark patina throughout, ranging from near-black in the recesses to a warmer, burnished bronze tone on the raised, higher-contact areas of each dome. Passages of verdigris oxidation appear intermittently along the edges and base, adding a naturalistic, mineral-like variation to the surface that enhances rather than detracts from the piece's abstract, almost topographical quality. The thick, substantial edge of the slab is left raw and unadorned, reinforcing the industrial, cast-object origin of the piece, possibly derived from a mold, template, or foundry pattern repurposed as a standalone sculptural object. Minor surface scuffing is visible throughout, consistent with gentle handling, but the form remains fully intact and undistorted.
This sculpture makes a striking tabletop or shelf object, equally at home as a paperweight-scale accent or a focal point within a curated collection of mid-century abstract and industrial objects. Its geometric, tactile form suits Mid-Century Modern, Industrial, Minimalist, and Brutalist interiors, pairing well with raw materials like concrete, unfinished wood, and other metal sculptural elements. Measuring 10¼ inches in width, 10¼ inches in depth, and 2¼ inches in height, it offers a substantial, grounded presence without requiring significant display space. To care for the piece, dust with a soft dry cloth and avoid polishing, which would disturb the desirable aged patina and oxidation. The sculpture is in good condition, with a consistent patina, areas of verdigris oxidation, and minor surface wear, but remains structurally sound and retains its original form. A tactile, thought-provoking piece with genuine industrial-modernist character.
