Antique metal letter and number stencil set dating to the mid-19th century, with the stencil design patented in 1860. The collection includes an assortment of individual metal letter, number, and punctuation stencils along with a substantially larger maker's mark stencil for Bean & Wright, manufactured by A. Gage of Somonauk, Illinois.
The set is housed in its original fitted wood storage box with a sliding front panel and recessed finger pull. The box retains aged lettering across the front and dovetailed corner construction. Also included is a wood-handled stencil brush. The combination of individual characters, punctuation marks, large commercial maker's stencil, brush, and fitted storage box offers a particularly complete example of early American commercial marking equipment.
