A rare and exceptionally refined circa 1900 jeweler’s presentation box, this elegant little case is distinguished by its luxurious covering of green shagreen leather. Originally created to present a special piece of jewelry, the box is an exquisite object in its own right and a wonderful survivor from the height of turn-of-the-century luxury craftsmanship.
The rectangular wooden case is fully wrapped in shagreen, allowing the beautifully distinctive texture to continue across the lid, sides, and edges. The surface displays the characteristic tightly packed, pearl-like pattern for which shagreen has been prized for centuries, with subtle variations of pale sage, olive, and muted green creating wonderful depth and visual interest.
Its restrained design is particularly appealing. Rather than relying on elaborate ornament, the box allows the extraordinary natural texture of the shagreen to provide the decoration. The gently rounded edges, slim proportions, and discreet closure give it the sophisticated appearance of a bespoke jeweler’s case or luxury presentation box. Shagreen-covered objects were expensive specialty goods, and surviving antique presentation cases are considerably less commonly encountered than conventional leather, velvet, or silk-covered jewelry boxes. The compact size further suggests that this example was intended for the presentation of a particularly special piece of jewelry—perhaps a brooch, bracelet, medal, or similar treasured object.
Measures approximately 4.25 inches wide × 3.25 inches deep × 0.75 inch high. Good antique condition with small area of loss at back above the hinge. Some discoloration to interior lining. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Today, it is equally desirable as a small decorative box or collector’s object, particularly for admirers of antique shagreen, luxury accessories, gentleman’s objects, and unusual turn-of-the-century craftsmanship. Its wonderfully subtle green coloration would look especially handsome displayed on a dressing table, desk, or alongside a collection of antique jewelry and objets de vertu.
