A rare and remarkably well-preserved antique wash set by W.H. Grindley & Co. of England, comprising a sculptural ewer and its matching oversized basin. Dating to circa 1898–early 1900s, the ewer corresponds to William H. Grindley’s patented design of November 1, 1898 and retains its period Grindley factory mark with the associated British registration number.
The set is distinguished by its exceptionally vivid apple-green and white graduated glaze—a particularly fresh and decorator-friendly coloration rarely encountered in surviving Victorian wash sets. Raised floral swags encircle both pieces, while the ewer features a dramatic sweeping spout, pedestal foot and elaborate double-curved handle. The richly molded form and saturated glaze give the set considerable sculptural presence.
An early handwritten family provenance note remains affixed beneath the ewer, identifying the set as a wedding gift to the owner’s grandparents. This personal notation adds a meaningful record of the set’s history and suggests that the two pieces have remained together through generations.
Beautifully scaled for display, the set would make a striking centerpiece on a washstand, console, chest or large bathroom vanity. It also works wonderfully as a floral vessel or decorative focal point within an English country, Victorian, grandmillennial or traditionally layered interior.
The exceptionally strong condition, rare coloration, matching two-piece composition, documented patented form and surviving family provenance distinguish this set from more commonly encountered antique pitchers and basins.
MARKINGS
Both pieces bear period W.H. Grindley & Co. England factory marks. The ewer is additionally marked “Patented Nov. 1st ’98 U.S.A.” and “Rd No. 321192.” A handwritten family wedding-gift provenance label remains affixed beneath the ewer.

The apple-green and white glaze remains exceptionally vivid, and the raised decoration retains excellent definition. Age-appropriate characteristics include overall glaze crazing, most noticeable beneath the basin, along with minor shelf wear, scattered surface marks, small glaze variations and occasional pinpoint discoloration. The underside rims exhibit expected contact wear from more than a century of use and display. The original handwritten provenance note remains affixed beneath the ewer.
