Two highly detailed fish … Read more A sculptural vintage silver-plated “Deux Poissons” vase by Christofle, based on Émile Reiber’s celebrated 1874 design.

Two highly detailed fish intertwine symmetrically, with overlapping bodies, textured scales and dramatically crossed tails forming the base. Their heads meet at the top to form a narrow bud-vase opening.

Reiber developed the original design during the height of French Japonisme, drawing inspiration from Japanese decorative arts. The original 1874 Vase modèle Deux Poissons is represented in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay. Christofle itself describes the design as inspired by a late-Edo-period Japanese bronze vase and continues to recognize it as an important historic house design.

Signed Christofle and bearing impressed maker’s marks.

Very good vintage condition with light surface wear appropriate to age. Silver-plated surface presents beautifully with a bright reflective finish. Some darkening/residue remains within the narrow interior opening.

A distinctive small-scale piece of French decorative art that works beautifully as a sculptural object with or without flowers. See less
