A monumental and exceptionally ornate silvered metal ewer with coordinating underplate, richly modeled throughout with classical figures, masks, scrolling foliage, and elaborate Renaissance Revival-style ornament.
The dramatic ewer rises to approximately 22 inches and is distinguished by an extraordinary openwork figural handle incorporating sculptural figures and dense foliate decoration. The body is similarly embellished in high relief, while the accompanying underplate features a broad pierced border and complementary classical ornament.
The composition draws heavily from Renaissance and Baroque ceremonial metalwork, when elaborate ewers and basins functioned as both practical vessels and impressive objects of display. By the 18th century, large-scale ewer and basin sets were frequently intended primarily for presentation on sideboards and buffets rather than ordinary use.
Unmarked. The precise metal composition has not been tested; the piece is therefore represented conservatively as silvered metal rather than bronze or silver.
20th century.
Ewer and underplate together measure approximately 22 inches high × 14.5 inches wide.
Good vintage condition with surface wear, oxidation, patination, and areas of wear to the silvered finish consistent with age. Please review photographs closely for exact condition.
An unusually substantial and theatrical decorative object with tremendous presence, equally suited to a grand entry, dining room, library, console, or traditional collected interior.
