This exceptional Baotou piece from the Republican period presents a rare, deeply narrative composition. Woven specifically as a hallway runner, its elongated format frames a complex, naturalistic scene, typical of the high artistic standards of early 20th-century Chinese weaving.

The central field is dominated by a nuanced palette of beige and ivory color, which provides a soft, atmospheric backdrop for the detailed imagery. Against this luminous ground, stylized mountains recede into the distance, rendered in subtle earth tones and contrasting deep indigo blue that defines the water and border.

The design is rich with traditional Chinese symbolism, featuring sika deer—emblems of longevity and prosperity—and red-crowned cranes, symbols of immortality. While the primary focus is the landscape, the border subtly incorporates stylized floral elements and vine work, providing a sophisticated transition to the deep blue frame.

This piece stands as a testament to the enduring artistry of Chinese weaving traditions. Its fine wool pile and complex pictorial design ensure it remains a highly desirable example among collectors of early 20th-century antique rugs, offering both historical depth and unparalleled decorative appeal See less
