the p40 is one of osvaldo borsani's fundamental works and one of the great icons of postwar italian design. Its conception represented a profound reinterpretation of the traditional armchair, combining a modern, sculptural aesthetic with a sophisticated mechanical system developed around ergonomics and adaptability.

this example corresponds to the p40/c variant, a less common configuration of the celebrated model. Its articulated structure allows for extensive modification of the seat position: the backrest reclines, the headrest is adjustable, the characteristic flexible armrests can be folded down, and the extendable footrest allows the armchair to be transformed into a configuration similar to a chaise longue.

the integration of these mechanisms within a visually light structure is one of the most innovative aspects of the design and demonstrates borsani's unique ability to combine engineering, functionality, and formal elegance.

osvaldo borsani founded tecno with his brother fulgenzio in 1953. Through designs such as the p40, the d70 sofa, and later the graphis office system, borsani and tecno played a fundamental role in the international consolidation of italian industrial design.
