The square game board is richly decorated using the traditional Persian Khatam-kari technique, an elaborate form of marquetry created from minute sections of wood and other contrasting materials arranged into extraordinarily fine geometric patterns. Multiple concentric borders frame the playing field, creating an intricate architectural effect in tones of warm red, ivory, green, black and gold.

The chessboard itself is composed of alternating dark and golden squares embellished with delicate floral decoration, adding another layer of ornament to the already highly detailed surface. The workmanship is characteristic of the remarkable precision associated with traditional Persian decorative arts.

The accompanying 32 cast metal chess pieces are particularly appealing. Rather than conventional abstract forms, many are modeled as expressive human figures, animals and architectural forms. The two opposing sides are distinguished by contrasting silver-tone and warm bronze/copper-tone finishes. The close-up photographs show the individuality of the hand-finished pieces, including modeled faces, garments, animals and textured details. Their aged surface and natural patina contribute considerable character to the set.

Both functional and highly decorative, this chess set works beautifully as a game, a collector's object or simply displayed open on a cocktail table, library table or desk. Its elaborate Khatam work and unusual sculptural chessmen make it as much a work of decorative art as a traditional game.

Handcrafted in the Middle East, most likely Persia/Iran, circa 1950–1960.
