The substantial rounded form is decorated throughout with intricate incised geometric and abstract motifs, highlighted in rich shades of cobalt, indigo and slate blue against a deep charcoal-black and metallic bronze-toned ground.
Especially appealing is the sculptural treatment of the frog’s body, with exaggerated rounded legs, raised eyes and a broad expressive head. The hand-incised linear decoration follows the contours of the form and gives the piece an almost tribal, modernist quality.
The underside reveals the hollow construction and hand-finished character of the sculpture. No signature or maker’s mark has been located.
An unusual decorative object with considerable presence despite its compact size. Excellent displayed on a console, bookshelf, cocktail table or incorporated into an eclectic collection of studio ceramics. See less
