This exceptional Chinese textile captures the refined aesthetic of early 20th-century court artistry. Woven entirely of wool, this piece exemplifies the highly symbolic and pictorial designs characteristic of antique rugs from the region, often commissioned for high-status homes or governmental use.

The central field is dominated by a majestic, sinuous dragon rendered in a deep, saturated indigo, a stunning example of blue color rugs. Below the dragon, a pair of stylized Foo Dogs stand guard beside a stepped architectural element, reinforcing the rug's protective and auspicious narrative. The composition is balanced by scattered clouds and traditional Chinese emblems, all executed with remarkable precision.

The palette is intentionally restrained, featuring a creamy ivory ground that allows the striking indigo and subtle beige accents to achieve maximum contrast and visual depth. The primary border employs a classic Chinese meander or Greek key pattern, framing the pictorial scene with geometric precision. This careful interplay of color and geometry defines the rug's sophisticated presence.

Despite its age from the 1900s, this piece retains excellent pile height and structural integrity, a testament to the quality of early Peking weaving. Its dimensions qualify it as a highly desirable small scatter size rug, making it ideal for placement in a hallway, entryway, or as an accent piece in a refined study. This rare textile offers both historical significance and exceptional decorative versatility. See less
