This vintage sculpture is hand-carved from a single piece of solid wood into the fluid, streamlined form of a whale. The body swells generously through the midsection before tapering toward a broad, flared tail fluke, carved with a smooth, upward-lifting curve that captures a sense of motion mid-dive. A small pectoral fin projects from the lower body, carved in a simple raised curve that echoes the tail's shape. The wood's dense grain has been left partially exposed and worked with the natural contours of the timber, so rippling growth rings and darker heartwood streaks trace across the surface like waves or water movement, especially concentrated toward the tail where the grain forms tight, textured striations resembling scales or ripples. The finish is left largely natural, unpainted, allowing the warm honey and caramel tones of the wood, along with darker mineral streaks, to read as the whale's own coloring. Subtle tool marks and hand-sanded transitions throughout confirm the piece's handcrafted origins, and the overall silhouette is confident, simplified, and sculptural rather than literal, in keeping with mid-century folk and studio-carving traditions.
Display this piece on a bookshelf, mantel, or console as a grounding, organic accent, or use it as a striking centerpiece on a coffee table. Its natural material and simplified form suit Organic Modern, Coastal, Japandi, Scandinavian, and Wabi-Sabi interiors. The sculpture measures 12 inches wide, 4½ inches deep, and 4 inches high. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and apply a food-safe wood oil or wax occasionally to nourish the grain and maintain its natural sheen; keep away from prolonged direct sunlight and excess humidity. The piece is in very good vintage condition, with an original finish, warm natural patina, minor surface scuffs, and light wear consistent with age; it remains structurally sound with no repairs or losses.
