This vintage stoneware planter is carved in the form of a serene classical face, its profile rendered with soft, naturalistic modeling, a straight nose, closed eyes, and gently parted lips. Sweeping back from the brow, deeply incised, ribbed lines suggest wind-blown hair or a draped headdress, radiating outward in a fan-like pattern reminiscent of a scalloped shell. A small tight curl sits at the temple as a decorative accent, while a shallow opening at the crown, cradled within the flowing "hair," forms the actual planting vessel. The stoneware surface has an unglazed, matte quality, warmed by soft ochre and sandy tones along the ribbed sections and cooled by grey, weathered shading around the eyes and jaw, giving the piece an aged, quarried-stone appearance. The sculptural asymmetry, with the face turned in three-quarter profile against the abstracted linear hair, creates a striking play of light and shadow across the form, and the overall handcrafted texture speaks to confident, painterly tool work.
Use this planter for a small succulent or trailing plant on a windowsill, mantel, or garden wall niche, or display it empty as a standalone sculptural object. It suits Boho, Mediterranean, Organic Modern, Coastal, and Eclectic interiors, and pairs beautifully with stone, rattan, and other textural, earthy accents. The piece measures approximately 5¾ inches wide, 5¾ inches deep, and 5½ inches high. Dust with a soft dry brush, and if used as a planter, line the interior with a plastic liner to protect the porous stoneware from moisture damage. Avoid submerging or pressure washing. The planter is in very good vintage condition, structurally sound, with a well-preserved original finish, natural patina, and minor surface wear. Add it to your collection today.
